Olympia was a well-known city of ancient Greece, in Elis, as it was there that the Olympic Games were held during the classical era. The Games were comparable to Pythia, the other famous games organized in Delphi. The gold and ivory statue of Zeus, a work of Phidias and one of the seven wonders of antiquity was in Olympia. The Olympic games were first held in 776B.C. and were repeated every four years.
